Virgen de Chapi Pilgrimage

Chapi, 45 km southeast of Arequipa

More than 70,000 devotees walk through the night from Arequipa to the Chapi Sanctuary, 45 km into the volcanic desert, every May 1st. Columns of candlelight stretch for hours across the darkness. Along the route: chicha, adobo, and queso helado stalls. It is the largest pilgrimage in southern Peru and one of the most authentic experiences a visitor can have — religious fervor, Andean community, and lunar landscape in a single night.

Tip: Leave before midnight to join the night walk. Bring water, warm layers, and a flashlight.

El Misti Volcano Climb

Base at Monte Blanco, 25 km from Arequipa

El Misti (5,822 m / 19,101 ft) is Arequipa's guardian volcano and one of Peru's most accessible summits for climbers without technical experience. The standard route departs from Monte Blanco at 4,700 m and reaches the summit in 8–10 hours round trip. From the crater: Chachani, Pichu Pichu, Lake Titicaca on clear days, and the entire city laid out at the foot of the perfect cone. Local agencies organize guided departures every Friday night.

Tip: Acclimatize for 2 days in Arequipa before climbing. Dry season (May–November) offers the best conditions.

Colca Canyon TrekkingAdventureYear-round (best May–October)

Colca Canyon Trekking

Colca Canyon, 3.5 hours from Arequipa

Colca Canyon, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, is the most iconic adventure destination in southern Peru. The classic 2-day trek descends to the Sangalle oasis via the Cabanaconde route, with a condor-watching stop at Cruz del Cóndor at dawn. For those who want more days, the 4–5 day "full trek" passes through Collagua communities with pre-Hispanic terraces still in use and natural hot springs at night.

Tip: The descent to the oasis takes 3 hours; the return climb 5. Book an extra day for the condor.

Santa Catalina Monastery: Night VisitsCulturalThursdays 7–10 PM

Santa Catalina Monastery: Night Visits

Santa Catalina 301, Historic Center

Every Thursday evening the Santa Catalina Monastery — the city within the city — opens its doors by candlelight. The colored streets take on a completely different dimension without the sun: the blue, orange, and red cloister walls glow under flames, and guides narrate the history of the nuns who lived here from the 16th to 20th centuries almost without contact with the outside world. One of the most unique nighttime experiences in Peru.

Tip: Buy tickets at the booth the same day. Arrive before 7 PM for the first tour.

Andean Sanctuaries Museum — Juanita the Ice Maiden

La Merced 110, Historic Center

The Andean Sanctuaries Museum houses Juanita, the best-preserved Inca mummy in the world, found on the summit of Ampato (6,380 m / 20,930 ft) in 1995. The 12–14 year old girl was offered to the Sun over 500 years ago. The museum explains in detail the capacocha ritual, the textiles that accompanied her, and how Ampato's perfect freezing preserved even her internal tissues. Impressive, moving, and absolutely unique in the world.

Tip: Juanita is only displayed May–December; the rest of the year there are replicas and other mummies.

Yanahuara, Cayma, and surroundings

Picanterías are Arequipa's traditional restaurants, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. On this guided tour you visit 2–3 authentic picanterías in neighborhoods like Yanahuara and Cayma, taste seasonal dishes, learn the ritual of the "lunes picante," and chat with cooks who hold four generations of recipes. A gastronomic experience without quotation marks: not a tourist restaurant, but real Arequipa cooking.

Mercado San Camilo — Arequipa MorningsMarket / FoodDaily 6 AM–6 PM

Mercado San Camilo — Arequipa Mornings

Av. Piérola / Nicolás de Piérola, Center

Mercado San Camilo has been Arequipa's gastronomic heart since 1848. In the mornings, between 7–10 AM, locals buy their daily ingredients: shrimp from the Río Chili, cheese from Characato, freshly fermented chicha de guiñapo, Andean fruits like chirimoya and tuna. Fresh fruit juices, bread-and-Majes butter breakfasts, and Thursday adobo are neighborhood rituals no guidebook fully captures.

Free entry (budget S/. 20–40 for shopping)Weekly
Yanahuara Artisan FairMarket / FoodSaturdays 8 AM–2 PM

Yanahuara Artisan Fair

Malecón Bolognesi, Yanahuara district

Every Saturday the Yanahuara malecón — with its iconic viewpoint over Misti — becomes a craft market where artisans from Arequipa, Puno, and Cusco display alpaca and vicuña textiles, Quinua ceramics, pre-Hispanic silver jewelry, and Ayacucho retablos. The atmosphere is more local and relaxed than center markets. Combining it with breakfast at a malecón café and the volcano view makes a Saturday in Yanahuara one of the best possible mornings in Arequipa.
