Getting around the White City is easier than it looks once you know when to walk, when to call a ride app, and when to hop on a combi. Here is the practical guide, with real fares in soles and the tricks locals use every day.

Arequipa is a city to walk in its heart and to roll through at its edges. The historic center, with its narrow streets and sillar sidewalks, is best explored on foot, while reaching Yanahuara, Cayma, the airport, or Characato calls for knowing the three ways the city moves: on foot, by ride app, and by combi. Knowing which to use and when saves you time, soles, and more than one headache.

The historic center is for walking

From the Plaza de Armas, almost everything worth seeing is under fifteen minutes away on foot: the Santa Catalina Monastery, the San Camilo Market, Mercaderes street, and the San Lázaro neighborhood with its sillar alleys. Cross the Grau bridge and you reach the Yanahuara viewpoint in about twenty minutes, a walk well worth it for the views of Misti. The sidewalks are narrow and sometimes high, so wear comfortable shoes and mind the step.

Walking is also the most honest way to understand the city: the smell of pan de tres puntas in the morning, the Cathedral bells, the sillar courtyards peeking out behind heavy doors. In the center, leaving the taxi behind is not a sacrifice, it is part of the trip.

In Arequipa the center is walked and the city is ridden by combi; the trick is knowing where one ends and the other begins.

Ride apps: the safe choice at night

For longer distances or after dark, the local advice is clear: book a taxi through an app rather than flagging one on the street. InDrive is the most used in Arequipa because you propose the price and the driver accepts or negotiates; Uber also works well in the city. A ride from the center to Yanahuara or Cayma usually runs between 8 and 12 soles, and from the center to Rodríguez Ballón airport between 25 and 35 soles depending on the hour. Carry the exact address and some cash, since not every driver takes card.

Combis and buses: cheap, with a little know-how

The combi is how most arequipeños get around, and the fare is just 1 to 1.50 soles. Do not expect marked stops everywhere: they pull over at known corners while the fare collector shouts the route out the window. If you have just arrived, ask a local which combi passes your destination, keep coins handy, and avoid the morning and late-afternoon rush, when they run packed. It is the cheapest way to reach neighborhoods like Paucarpata or Cerro Colorado.

The simple rule for a visitor: walk the center, use an app at night and for long distances, and try a combi by day once you feel oriented. With those three pieces, getting around Arequipa stops being a mystery and becomes part of the pleasure of being here.
