Aerial view of Arequipa with Volcán Misti dominating the skyline

Volcán Misti Trek

The volcano you've been looking at all week from the Plaza de Armas — the perfect cone above the city rooftops — is climbable. Two days, one night at high camp, and you can stand on Misti's crater rim at 5,822 meters while the entire arc of the Andes stretches to the horizon.

Why Misti

One of the most iconic volcanoes in South America. Active but dormant (last significant eruption ~1985, minor activity 2005). Visible from anywhere in Arequipa. At 5,822m, it's a serious high-altitude objective but accessible without technical climbing skills if you're physically fit and properly equipped.

The Route

Most expeditions use the El Aguada trailhead at ~3,300m altitude (reached by 4WD from the city, ~1.5h). Day 1: El Aguada → base camp at 4,600m (5–6h hiking on volcanic scree, steep switchbacks). Night at camp — cold (bring a 3-season sleeping bag). Day 2: 3am wake up → summit push (pre-dawn, 4–5h) → descent → El Aguada (4–5h). Total active time: ~14–16h over two days.

The Summit

The crater is active but accessible. A crater lake sits in the inner section. On a clear morning (best: June–August), the view extends 400km — Cusco's mountains to the north, the Pacific coast to the west. Worth every step.

Technical Requirements

The final 200m to the summit sometimes requires crampons and basic ice axe use (wet season or after unusual snowfall). Your guide brings these. Most dry-season ascents don't need crampons. No ropes, no belaying — this is a walk, not a climb.

Physical Requirements

You must be in good shape — this is 14h+ of hiking at 3,300–5,822m. Altitude is the main enemy. Don't attempt without 2–3 days acclimatization in Arequipa (2,335m) first. If you're planning to summit Misti, keep your first days in the city gentle.

Guide Requirement

Mandatory. Not legal to attempt without a registered guide. Beyond legality, the route's orientation in poor visibility and altitude rescue logistics make a guide genuinely necessary. Not optional.

Operators

Pablo Tour (Calle Jerusalem 401), Naturaleza Activa (Calle Santa Catalina 211), Giardino Tours (Jerusalem 604). All reputable, similar prices. Book 1–2 days ahead. Cost $60–120 per person depending on group size and services included (meals, equipment).

What to Bring

Layered clothing (base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell), 3-season sleeping bag minimum, headlamp with spare batteries, 3L water, high-calorie snacks, sunscreen SPF 50+, gaiters (volcanic scree gets in everything), trekking poles (essential for descent).

When to Go

May–October for stable conditions. July–August are the driest and most popular. February–March is wet season — summit visibility poor, trails slippery.

Acclimatize before you go — this is not optional

Two to three days in Arequipa (2,335m) before attempting Misti. The jump from sea level to 5,822m without acclimatization has ended multiple expeditions in early failure and at least one rescue. You don't have to feel sick to need acclimatization — the physiological adaptation happens regardless of symptoms. Give your body the time.
