Selva Alegre: The Park Where Arequipa Comes to Breathe on Sundays

Across the Grau bridge, fifteen minutes from downtown, a eucalyptus grove hides a small boating lake, family picnics, and the Chachani volcano on the horizon. This is the green lung almost no tourist visits.

Crossing the Grau bridge from downtown Arequipa changes the scenery completely. On one side of the Chili river sits the sillar and tourist bustle of the Plaza de Armas; on the other, the Selva Alegre neighborhood, where a grove of eucalyptus and pine trees hides an artificial lake that most day visitors never see.

A forest where there should not be one

Arequipa sits surrounded by volcanic desert: the natural landscape here is dry earth and rock, with little vegetation outside the irrigated valleys. Parque Selva Alegre is the opposite: rows of eucalyptus trees over fifteen meters tall, planted in the early twentieth century to give the city its first urban forest, now shading packed-dirt paths and benches carved from volcanic stone. Among the trees, arequipeños still call it 'el bosque,' the forest, even though the map calls it a park.

On Sunday mornings, before the sun gets strong, Selva Alegre fills with families spreading blankets over the grass, kids on bicycles, and grandmothers walking between the eucalyptus trees like visiting an old relative.

What to do in the park

At the center of the park is a small lake with wooden rowboats, rented by the half hour for around S/ 5 to S/ 10 depending on the season; there is no fixed closing time, but boats stop going out once the afternoon light fades. Around it, anticuchos and corn-with-cheese stalls open from mid-morning on weekends, and informal patches of grass get claimed for family picnics.

A few steps from the park, crossing back over the Grau bridge heading west, is the Monasterio de la Recoleta, with its Franciscan cloister, a collection of pre-Inca mummies, and a library of twenty thousand antique books. The two visits pair well into a single morning: the park for walking and air, the monastery for history.

To get there from the Plaza de Armas, a ride-hailing taxi costs between S/ 6 and S/ 10 and takes about ten minutes; by combi, any route heading down Avenida Ejército drops passengers two blocks from the main entrance, for a fare of S/ 1 to S/ 1.50. The best time to go is on a weekday, when the park is nearly empty and the Chachani volcano shows clearly past the lake; Sunday afternoons, on the other hand, are when arequipeños make it their own.
